Neuroscience covers a broad swath of medical disciplines, encompassing everything connected to the nervous system: the brain, the spinal cord, the motor system and the network of sensory and motor nerves throughout the body. Treating this vast range of disorders requires a truly multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons and other specialists. Baylor has assembled an outstanding group of neurospecialists and advanced technologies to address virtually every kind of neurological disorder. And our neuroscience program has gained national attention. U.S. News and World Report has recognized the Center as one of the best in the country.
High tech. High touch. High expectations. Poised to grow in more than a dozen neuroscience specialty areas, our neuroscience center has already made its mark in the Southwest. We were the first facility in Texas and one of the few in the nation to have two 3-D systems capable of treating previously inoperable tumors. Offering advanced alternatives to highly invasive procedures is a Baylor hallmark.
With the range and complexity of neurological disorders, multidisciplinary collaboration is critical. At Baylor, not only do we cover virtually all neuroscience disciplines, but we also bring them together into progressive, integrated therapies. Not surprisingly, whether it’s a migraine or a brain tumor, patients and referring physicians nationwide have come to expect the right answers here.
Areas of Need
Sometimes, the most enlightened component of care is the most human. Baylor’s patient navigation service is an example. Patient navigators help newly diagnosed patients through their treatment program by scheduling appointments, explaining each step of treatment, tracking their progress and offering a caring companion during one of the most stressful times in a person’s life.
Clinical research yields a threefold bonus of benefits. First, it offers patients access to participation in clinical research of the latest medical advances, often at no charge. In the last two years alone, more than 337 patients have participated in our clinical trials. Second, it is our clinical research that keeps us at the forefront of neuroscience medicine. Finally, clinical research is critical to fulfilling our mission to serve all people.
Our medical leadership is only as strong as our ability to train the brightest minds in the field. Because of our patient volume and the vast experience of the physicians on our medical staff, we are in a unique position to offer outstanding, real-world training through residencies and fellowships. After graduation from medical school, new physicians seek residency positions at leading teaching hospitals. Fellowships, which begin after residency, allow physicians to specialize even further. Each of these residents and fellows, whether they remain at Baylor or seek positions elsewhere, will affect the lives of 50,000 to 100,000 people over the course of their careers. This can amount to a significant impact on the health of our community.
RESOURCES AND SUPPORT
Patients who are informed and supported are willing partners in their care and active managers of their health. Knowing the value of patient education, Baylor aims to create a centralized resource center for our neuroscience patients. This unique Baylor resource would connect patients and caregivers with social workers who provide access to educational materials, support groups, counseling and community resources.
