Frequently Asked Questions

This collection of frequently asked questions provides brief answers to many common questions about Campaign 2015. If you have other questions you would like to discuss, please contact us.

How did you decide on the campaign goal of $250 million?
Given the proposed duration of the campaign (5 years, 2010 - 2015), we determined that a $250 million goal was ambitious but attainable. We have an extensive database of potential donors, strong relationships and the will to make a transformational impact.

Baylor seems like a wealthy institution. Does it really need donor support?
As a fiscally stable, AA rated, not-for-profit institution, Baylor has a history of reinvesting its resources into improvements in patient care, facilities or community programs. But to build Baylor beyond its current scale and scope – to build the Baylor of tomorrow – we need significant private dollars.

Beyond money, what will the campaign accomplish for Baylor?
A campaign of this scope and magnitude allows us to engage in thoughtful, strategic planning and to set audacious, galvanizing goals. When we achieve that goal, we will have moved Baylor to “higher ground” in ways that will significantly impact the very issues facing both our institution and our health care system at large.

What percentage of philanthropic gifts go toward administrative costs?
Zero percent of philanthropic gifts goes toward administrative costs. Donations are directed in their entirety to their designated area of support. We are fortunate that the Baylor Health Care System covers all of the Foundation’s costs.

Baylor has just finished the first phase of a state-of-the-art cancer center. What’s next?
Within the next 10 years, Texas will see a 21 percent increase in the number of people seeking cancer care. A dedicated cancer center to serve them has long been a dream at Baylor. The money to build the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center was funded in part by internal resources, in part by external partners, and in part by philanthropy. To date, more than $50 million has been raised from thousands of donors for this important initiative, and we continue to raise funds to complete our inpatient cancer hospital.

Is Baylor Health Care System connected to Baylor University?
Baylor Health Care System, Baylor College of Dentistry, and Baylor College of Medicine all share a heritage with Baylor University. None are currently affiliated with the University.

Does Baylor have an affiliation with any one religious denomination?
Baylor is a faith-based institution. We have a strong legacy of support and leadership from the Baptist community, but our staff and patients represent many beliefs and we have 80 chaplains, representing all faiths, to offer spiritual guidance and care.
